Creators lose more sponsorship revenue at renewal than at the pitch. The sponsor was happy, the slot ended, nobody proposed the next one, and three months later the budget went elsewhere. Inventory design and a renewal habit fix most of it.
Design inventory in tiers a buyer recognises
Sponsors and agencies think in tiers: a presenting or title position, primary placements, secondary placements, and one-off or classified slots. Mirror that. A presenting sponsor for a season, a primary mid-roll per episode, a secondary mention, a classified line. Named tiers make comparison easy and upsell natural.
Sell runs, not slots
Offer single slots, but lead with runs: four issues, a six-episode series, a quarter. Runs give the sponsor time to see results, give you predictable revenue, and make exclusivity meaningful. A run is also a partnership, which is how it should be recorded on your B2B ID.
Make availability visible
Sponsors cannot buy what they cannot see. State which formats exist, whether they are open, and any category exclusivity already sold. A request that arrives against known availability is a request you can accept in one reply.
Run the renewal before the run ends
Two-thirds of the way through a run, send a short note: what has gone out, what is coming, and the next run with a date. Attach a recommendation request. Renewals proposed while the sponsor is still seeing results close; renewals proposed after a gap restart the whole sale.
Let the record do the selling
Each completed sponsorship recorded on your B2B ID, with a recommendation from the sponsor, is evidence for the next one. Over a year that record becomes the reason a new sponsor requests a season on the first contact rather than testing a single slot.
Package inventory in tiers buyers recognise and lead with runs, not slots.
Make formats and availability visible so requests can be accepted in one reply.
Propose the renewal before the current run ends, with a recommendation request attached.
Recorded sponsorships and recommendations turn first-time sponsors into season sponsors.
